CHAMBER PRESIDENT NAMED TO STATEWIDE P-16 COUNCIL

Phyllis Snodgrass, President of the San Marcos Area Chamber of Commerce
(SMACC), was recently appointed as the business representative to the State P-16
Council.
The P-16 Council ensures that long-range plans and educational programs for
the state complement the functioning of the entire public education system, from
early childhood through postgraduate study.
"I am honored by this appointment to represent business interests on this

SOAR RELEASES EARLY CHILDHOOD REPORT

Changing demographics threaten student performance without early childhood intervention
The rapid growth of children under the age of five in the San Marcos area over the past five years is putting a strain on local early childhood infrastructure and could be impacting student's academic performance rates, according to a recently-released study commissioned by SOAR, the new alliance of local partners working on collaborative initiatives supporting local education.
SOAR recently released the Regional Assessment Report for San Marcos and Hays County, which studied the current infrastructure and need for early childhood support services in Hays County and the San Marcos area. Read more

CITY COUNCIL TO CONSIDER CDBG ALLOCATIONS
|
|
The San Marcos City Council
will review applications and provide direction for allocations of Community
Development Block Grant funds and supplemental funding at a special meeting on
Thursday May 21, 2009 at 5 p.m.
The City will receive $139,827
in additional CDBG funding (CDBG-R) for under the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009. These funds will be used for "shovel ready" projects
that use materials produced in the United States.
The City will target Victory
Gardens neighborhood and consider an impact project in the downtown
area.
The discussion and direction
will be part of a special meeting and budget discussion on Thursday, May 21 at 5
p.m. at City Hall, 630 E. Hopkins.
